Exam Answers - A Level Chemistry

1A) This is a primary alcohol, and therefore potassium dichromate acts as an oxidising agent. The initial product would be an aldehyde called butan-1-al. However to form only this you must distill it as it is formed. In this case distilling did not occur. Further oxidation occurs and the aldehyde is oxidised to the carboxylic acid Butan-1-oic acid.

1B) Phosphorous pentachloride causes chlorination of the alcohol, and is often used as a test for alcohols as dense white fumes are formed. A mixture of products are formed including 1-chorobutane, Phosphorous oxychloride, and hydrogen chloride.

1c) This is an example of a dehydration reaction in which water is removed from the alcohol. The main organic product formed is But-1-ene.
